WinRAR is a must-have software in the field of data archiving and compression utilities for Windows. A reference, to download and discover in trial version, which supports the vast majority of compression formats and a wide variety of archive files.

Why use WinRAR?

Since its creation in 1995, WinRAR has been an essential software in the field of data archiving on Windows. The publisher also claims some 500 million users worldwide (and probably many more downloads). WinRAR can be used to compress and decompress files and folders to simplify their storage and sharing, whether for downloading or uploading. The files and folders resulting from the compression are brought together in what are called archives. The archive created is generally lighter than the sum of all the files that compose it, which makes it easier to download.

The tool is particularly handy for sharing documents via email or for creating a single archive comprising the entire contents of a directory. It is also a solution from the point of document security. Winrar allows you to configure a password to limit the extraction of files. Everything is accompanied by encryption (usually AES-256 bits) to ensure that the archive is not compromised.

How to download and install WinRAR?

It is possible to download WinRAR in its latest version on Clubic. Only available on Windows, the software is lightweight and therefore installs quickly. WinRAR is available in 32-bit and 64-bit versions, be careful to choose according to the architecture of your Windows system!

Like the majority of its competitors, WinRAR integrates directly into Windows Explorer and thus makes it possible to compress or decompress files via the contextual menu accessible with a simple right click of the mouse.

Formats compatible with WinRAR

The software developed by RARLAB primarily manages its own RAR format popularized by sharing applications. The algorithm of RAR format makes it very efficient and explains why the format has rapidly gained popularity on the web, especially on download platforms. It also supports the most common archive formats, namely the ZIP and ZIPX extensions specific to Winzip, the 7Z from the excellent free software 7-Zip as well as the formats CAB, TAR, ARJ, LZH, Gzip, BZ2 , TAR.GZ, ACE UUE, JAR and ISO.

The RAR 5 format is also managed by the software and improves the compression and decompression of large files. It also provides performance optimization on machines equipped with multi-core processors.

After installation, right click on your RAR file and unzip the archive.

Alternatives to WinRAR

If the WInRAR software is essential, its interface remains as austere as ever and several competing solutions have emerged over the years. This is how we find 7-Zip, particularly renowned for being light and efficient, especially with regard to the 7z format.

Peazip, Bandizip, BetterZip or even WinZip or The Unarchiver, clearly these are not the solutions that are missing. Each offers its own ergonomics with more or less extensive integration into the operating system with the possibility or not of opening an archive protected by a password.

Limitations of the trial version: Winrar is historically distributed under a Shareware license. The demo version is well known for its 40-day limitation but can still be functional after this period.
